How to read these numbers
Equity mutual funds don’t earn a fixed rate. Some years are up, some down. The rate you pick is a smooth average used to illustrate compounding, not a promise. Try a lower rate as well to see a cautious case.
Starting early matters more than the amount: compare 10 and 20 years at the same SIP. For whether to invest a lump sum at once or spread it out, read SIP vs lump sum: what the maths says. To see how fund costs eat into returns, read the expense ratio explainer.
Frequently asked questions
How does this SIP calculator work?
It assumes you invest at the start of every month and that your money grows at the yearly rate you choose, compounded monthly (rate ÷ 12 each month). One-time investments compound yearly. Real returns vary and can be negative; the rate is your assumption, not a forecast.
What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up (or top-up) SIP raises your monthly amount by a fixed percentage once a year, usually in line with salary increases. Even a 10% yearly step-up makes a large difference over long periods.
How is the goal amount worked out?
In Goal mode we work backwards: given your target, years and assumed return, we find the monthly SIP that would reach it, including any yearly step-up you pick.
Does this include tax or fund costs?
No. Use a return figure that is already net of the fund’s expense ratio, and remember that gains may be taxed when you sell. See our explainer on expense ratios.
