The story

The four founders, all from Flipkart, noticed that even well-educated friends found investing confusing. Paperwork, jargon and distrust kept millions of Indians out of mutual funds and stocks.

Groww started (2016–17) with a simple mutual-fund app: clean design, direct plans and plain explanations. It invested heavily in educational content and YouTube videos so new investors could learn and act in one place. Later it added stocks, F&O and more.

The pandemic-era wave of first-time investors accelerated growth. In April 2021, an $83 million Series D led by Tiger Global valued Groww at over $1 billion. In November 2025 its parent company listed on the stock exchanges.

The methods that worked

1

Simplicity is a feature

A clean, jargon-free interface lowered the fear barrier for first-time investors.

2

Education as acquisition

Free videos and explainers built trust and brought users in at very low cost.

3

Start narrow, then expand

Mutual funds first, then stocks, F&O and other products to the same trusted user base.

4

Ride a structural shift

Cheap data, UPI, e-KYC and a young population created the conditions; Groww was ready when the wave came.

The hard parts

Lessons for Indian founders

Conclusion

Groww turned financial education and simple design into a distribution engine — and rode India’s investing boom all the way to the stock exchange.

Status: Listed on NSE/BSE since Nov 2025.
