The story
When Varun and Ghazal Alagh had their first child, they struggled to find baby-care products in India that matched their safety expectations. In 2016 they launched Mamaearth with “toxin-free” baby products sold online.
Selling directly to consumers (D2C) let them learn fast from reviews and data. They expanded into skincare, haircare and more, using influencer and digital marketing at scale, and later built a portfolio of brands under parent company Honasa Consumer.
In January 2022, a $52 million round led by Sequoia Capital India valued the company at $1.2 billion. Honasa’s IPO opened on 31 October 2023, making it one of the first new-age D2C companies to list in India.

The methods that worked
Founder-problem fit
The founders were the customer — that made the positioning authentic and specific.
D2C learning loop
Selling direct gave real-time feedback on what to make next and how to price it.
Influencer distribution at scale
Thousands of creators and reviews built awareness faster than traditional TV advertising.
House of brands
New brands for different needs grew the addressable market beyond the first category.
The hard parts
- Rising digital ad costs make D2C customer acquisition expensive.
- Public debate over valuation at IPO.
- Building offline retail distribution to match online reach.
Lessons for Indian founders
- Solve a problem you personally feel — it sharpens every decision.
- Own the customer relationship and data from day one.
- Plan for offline distribution once online acquisition costs rise.
